Join us for this fascinating workshop, where Amanda will take you through the whole process of spinning flax. Starting with bundles of dry flax straw and ending with long, glossy flax fibres to dress a distaff with and spin. She will demonstrate how to break, scutch, and hackle flax. There will also be straw available to try this yourself if you’d like to. If that sounds like a little too much effort, she will also have line flax available that just needs hackling, and some ready to spin.
You will make and dress a distaff, and also try your hand at spinning both long fibre and short tow without a distaff too.
Whether you are interested in spinning linen from purchased fibre, or want to know the whole process so that you can grow your own, Amanda’s workshop is the perfect starting point to your flax adventures.
Don’t have a wheel? Never spun before? Don’t worry, Amanda is used to teaching beginners and will have some simple spindles and distaves for you to have a go too
We will send you a list of equipment you’ll need for the workshop (but please let us know if you don’t have a wheel). As with all our workshops, there will be a lovely lunch, and plenty of tea, coffee and cake to keep your energy levels up.
