So you have learnt to spin, now what’s next?
Perhaps it’s time to get to grips with how to change the thickness and twist of your yarn or how to spin yarn for different purposes? Learn about wheel ratios, what they mean and how they affect your yarn. Join expert spinner and tutor, Amanda Hannaford to explore different types of yarn with confidence.
This workshop is ideal for someone who has learnt to spin, is comfortable with their wheel, and can treadle (we are not barring students with spindles or electric wheels) at a steady rate without having to concentrate on that aspect too much. There won’t be time in class for basic spinning instruction, but if you’ve joined us for a Learn To Spin workshop with Amanda, you’ll be ok!
During the day you’ll make a range of samples from lace to Aran weight, create some samples with more twist and have a more in-depth exploration of plying techniques. There will be a discussion about the length of fibre and how they affect the yarn you can create as well as fibre type. Good note taking will be encouraged for future explorations and we’ll consider yarn finishing and how to work towards a consistent end result.
In short we are going to cover all the things you need to know to get just the yarn you want.
A full list of equipment will be sent on booking, but you will need your own spinning wheel – treadle or electric.
Your day will include a lovely lunch, plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits.
