’STRIPS, STRIPES & SATINS’ – Exploring 18th Century Norwich Textiles
The talk is based on a project that I worked on, with historian Dr Michael Nix, inspired by the brightly coloured textiles that Norwich was famous for. As a textiles graduate from NUA, (Norwich University of the Arts) specialising in weave and natural dyeing, for many years I have been fascinated by the vibrancy of the colours in the 18th century pattern books and wanted to try to reproduce some of the textiles in a contemporary way, working with the same dyes but using more eco friendly recipes and methods.
I dyed all the yarns, then wove three different designs on a 4 shaft loom to create cloth samples and a reproduction waistcoat.
Inspired by a ‘slow’ ethos that celebrates artisan skills and local provenance of materials, I colour my world with natural dyes such as madder, weld and woad, using traditional skills to produce contemporary woven and stitched textiles.
