‘Weaving Structure and Substance’ an online talk from Ann Richards
December 4 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am£12
We are thrilled and honoured to be hosting weaver, tutor and author Ann Richards to talk about her new book Weaving Structure and Substance which was published in the UK on 27th September 2021.
Ann Richards trained and worked as a biologist, before going on to study woven textiles at West Surrey College of Art & Design (now the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham) where she later also worked as a lecturer. (Teaching a member of The Loom Shed team in that time!) “The special ethos of the textile department, with its emphasis on designing through making, has stayed with me throughout my life but the earlier background in biology also remains an important influence because form and function in nature provide a wonderful source of ideas.”
Ann is best known for her sculptural textiles, pushing weaving into 3D form using structure, but also in her yarn choice.
“I first began to experiment with strongly textured textiles and high-twist yarns while a student and then continued to develop this work after I left college. The fabrics are smooth rectangular pieces on the loom but transform themselves when soaked in water, as the high-twist yarns of wool, silk or cotton shrink and crinkle, pleating and shaping the fabric into flexible scarves and garments.”
More recently Ann began to combine these traditional materials with a silk/steel yarn that gives the fabric a temporary ‘memory’ for additional pleats and folds. This hybrid mix of textile fibre and metal generates unique qualities that proved ideal for textile jewellery and this has become a major part of her work.
Ann’s wonderful first book, Weaving Textiles That Shape Themselves focussed on techniques for creating highly textured textiles and although some of these fabrics also feature in Weaving: Structure and Substance, in this new book she also looks at weave design more broadly. In the talk she will explain the background to her work, different approaches to the design process and the practical issues involved in designing through making.
Don’t miss this opportunity to spend time online with Ann Richards and discuss her inspiration and way of working. The resulting textiles are simply stunning.
*** This talk will be recorded, and sent to ticket holders to watch after the event if you can’t join us live. ***
