SUMMARY:The Loom Shed Weave Study Group 26/27 - Overshot
DESCRIPTION:Mondays 7 – 8pm\n7th September 2026\, 18th January\, 5th April\, 5th July 2027 and September 2027 \nThis year\, join Louise Cottey for one of her weaving passions — Overshot!  Yes\, we are teaching this course ourselves!\nExpert weaver and tutor Louise has been teaching weaving for years\, and it was through her guidance that Liz discovered that weaving was missing from her life for too long!. Together\, we bring both experience and enthusiasm to every session\, sharing the skills and insights that have kept The Loom Shed alive and thriving. \nWe love overshot: perhaps it’s the fair-isle overtones\, perhaps the clear pattern — but always with the possibility of pushing the classic structure out of the box. Over five online sessions\, we’ll introduce the structure\, familiarise you with threading\, lifting\, and the rules of overshot — and then show you how to bend them. Add more than one colour? Use textured or bobbly yarn? Create your own structure? Absolutely yes\, yes and yes! \nThis course is ideal for newer weavers\, working from the beginning of the structure on four shafts. But if you have more experience and want a fresh challenge\, we welcome you too. You’ll leave with confidence in reading and adapting overshot drafts\, plus a toolkit of ideas for exploring colour\, texture\, and design in your own weaving. \nDuring the sessions\, we will explore: \n\nThe basic principles of overshot weaving\nHow to read and understand overshot drafts\nHow threading blocks relate to treadling sequences\nExperimenting with colour\, texture and pattern emphasis\nAdapting drafts and designing your own overshot patterns\nWays of pushing the structure further into other weave effects\n\nBetween sessions\, you’ll be encouraged to weave samples exploring the ideas discussed. We will also create a private online group where participants can share progress\, questions and inspiration throughout the course.\nEach session will be recorded if you cannot attend live. \nEquipment\nTo join the study group\, you will need: \n\nA 4-shaft loom or larger – 4 shafts are more than enough to explore overshot and have a lot of fun\, but we’ll also cater for anyone with 8 shafts or more who wants to experiment further and push the structure in new directions.\nA selection of yarns to experiment with colour and texture\nSquared paper\, coloured pencils and an eraser for drafting (or drafting software if you already have it\, it is NOT a requirement)\n\nWe hope you can join us.\nThis course can be paid for in two instalments: £85 now and the remaining £55 by 30th September.

SUMMARY:The Loom Shed Natural Dye Study Group - Cellulose Fibres 2026/7
DESCRIPTION:16 September 2026\, 3 February 2027\, 28 April 2027\, 14 July 2027\, 20 October 2027 \nWednesday evenings 7pm – 8.30pm \nOur Natural Dye Study group returns again to look at dyeing cellulose yarns and fabrics. The ethos behind these study groups are to improve our knowledge of natural dyes and our practice with them – to dig a little deeper and ask ‘what happens if . . ?’ \nThis course will give you a framework for working with natural dyes and open up new areas of exploration. So whether you are new to the craft or have some experience\, we hope you find something new to get excited about. \nWe will focus on dyeing cellulose fibre (cotton\, linen\, hemp\, etc.) for 2026/7\,  looking at different mordants to create a wide palette of colours. We will also discuss salient issues that affect the dyer – how best to dispose of your unwanted dye material? What is the best policy for foraging for materials? What effect does your water have on the colour? \nWe will be meeting seasonally throughout the year to explore mordanting in September\, dyeing with cochineal or sustainable brazilwood in January\, Walnut and Dyers Camomile in April\, then Indigo in July. Each session will be led by expert dyer and Loom Shed regular tutor\, Jane Deane\, who will lead us in a discussion\, demonstrate a certain technique and set your project for the months ahead. \nWe will also be joined in two sessions by guest speakers\, Isabella Whitworth and Deb Bamford\, to share their areas of expertise and inspire you to explore different avenues in your research. \nYou will need a certain amount of dye equipment and an area away from food preparation to complete this study. You will be sent a materials list and we are working with Debbie Tomkies at DT Crafts to be our one-stop-shop for dyes\, mordants\, modifiers\, skeins and equipment. She can also answer any questions you may have about what resources you need. \nWe estimate this course will take 12 hours of independent practice time\, but we don’t ask you to produce a certain amount of samples. How involved you get with each session depends on how much time you have available that season. Each session will be recorded and sent out to all participants in the following week\, so you can catch up if you miss an evening or simply watch a bit that needed clarifying again. \nWe have an online social group for you to share your results and ask questions throughout the year. It’s always good to have a group to celebrate your successes and commiserate your failures with! We will also have to consider a form of graduation ceremony where you can see what everyone in the group has achieved during the year. \n*** You can pay for this course in instalments – £90 on booking and the remaining £60 by 1st April***

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Tablet Weaving with Sue Day
DESCRIPTION:Braid weaving is a fascinating craft – such complex patterns can be made with a seemingly simple\, portable loom. But perhaps that’s how our ancestors always wove? Connect with your inner Viking and enjoy this absorbing way of weaving for a day. \nDuring this workshop\, expert tutor and dyer\, Sue Day will show you how to make a braid by turning the tablets in different directions to create the final design. \nWe will learn how to thread the tablets and weave a design with a triangle motif. We’ll explore the effect of colour on the pattern\, how the threading affects the final outcome and what the possibilities are of using different shaped cards. \nSue will even guide us in the process of designing our own braiding patterns. This workshop will give you a good grounding in the tablet weaving with handouts to refer to in the future. You may find yourself addicted! \nSue Day will provide all equipment and materials\, so you can just relax and enjoy the weaving. \nAs usual\, The Loom Shed will provide you with a nourishing lunch\, plenty of tea and coffee with a sweet treat or two!

DESCRIPTION:This is one not to miss! The very experienced spinner and highly skilled tutor and author\, Amanda Hannaford is coming to The Loom Shed to teach us how to spin right from the very beginning! Try your hand at carding\, using a spindle and a spinning wheel. \nIf you’re completely new to spinning\, but always wanted to have a go\, this workshop is for you. Amanda will start by introducing you to a large basket of clean wool straight from the sheep’s back\, and all the tools you need to turn the wool into useable yarn. \nWe will use specially designed wire brushes to turn the wool in to fluffy rolls and then add twist using a hand spindle to make the loose fibres into yarn. There will be spinning wheels on hand to try\, in case you’d like to take your newfound hobby further\, and we’ll also experiment with mill-prepared wool in case you don’t know any friendly sheep! \nThe Loom Shed will provide a delicious lunch\, plenty of teas and coffee and a sweet treat when needed! \n
