SUMMARY:Tapestry Weaving Workshop with Bridget Lane
DESCRIPTION:Tapestry Weaving Workshop \nImmerse yourself in the art of tapestry weaving during this two-day workshop. Learn fundamental tapestry techniques while exploring ways to add texture to your work. \nWorking on a prepared frame loom\, you’ll begin with plain weave before moving on to using multiple wefts to create shapes. If you’re interested in exploring textures\, you’ll be introduced to working with split and double warp settings\, along with knotting\, tufting and wrapping techniques to achieve a variety of effects. On a second warp\, you can experiment with larger mixed-weft bundles to produce bold\, textured surfaces. \nThere will be information on weaving design and settings\, as well as how best to finish off your work and Bridget will happily share various tips and tricks to help you improve your weaving. \nTapestry weaving allows you to slow-down a little and be creative with an art form that plays with colour and design. It’s easy to continue at home once you have the fundamental skills. \nThis class is for beginners and improvers\, as well as tapestry weavers wanting to take their weaving to the next level. Pre-warped frames and all weaving materials will be provided. If you’d like to incorporate your own threads into textural work\, feel free to bring them along. \nThis workshop will include lunch\, refreshments and a sweet treat on both days. If you’d like to escape to mid Devon for the weekend\, ask us for our accommodation list. \nThis workshop can be paid for in two instalments – £130 now and the remaining £100 by 10th April 2026.

SUMMARY:Transforming Nettles into Yarn
DESCRIPTION:Did you know you can make cordage\, yarn & cloth from our local nettles? Nettle fibre is surprisingly strong and silky and can be used for many things and is very sustainable. \nBrigitte from BeeKay Makes returns to The Loom Shed this year to teach us how to process nettles in person. Please don’t be put off by their stings; full guidance on harvesting will be given. Our landlords are now very proud of the standard of their nettles\, all thanks to Brigitte and they will be saving a crop especially for us! \nStinging nettles have been used as a fibre plant for textiles for over 3000 years in the UK\, to make everything from heavy sailcloth to fine table linen up until the 18th century. Nettles are of great interest again since they one of most sustainable local fibres you can imagine. \nDuring the workshop we will start by gathering nettles & discuss their history and folklore. Nettles won’t sting after being harvested and Brigitte will then show us how to extract nettle fibre from the plant\, before teaching us how to spin it simply to create a length of yarn or cord. \nYou’ll head home with your own samples fibre and yarn samples\, information and enthusiasm for nettle processing. You’ll never look at a patch of nettles in the same way again! \nAs always at The Loom Shed\, your day will include a nourishing lunch and plenty of tea and cake. Let us know if you’d like our list of local accommodation.

SUMMARY:The Loom Shed Weave Study Group 26/27 - Overshot
DESCRIPTION:Mondays 7 – 8pm\n8th June & 7th September 2026\, 18th January\, 5th April\, 5th July 2027 \nThis year\, join Louise and Liz for one of their weaving passions — Overshot!  Yes\, we are teaching this course ourselves!\nExpert weaver and tutor Louise has been teaching weaving for years\, and it was through her guidance that Liz discovered that weaving was missing from her life for too long!. Together\, we bring both experience and enthusiasm to every session\, sharing the skills and insights that have kept The Loom Shed alive and thriving. \nWe love overshot: perhaps it’s the fair-isle overtones\, perhaps the clear pattern — but always with the possibility of pushing the classic structure out of the box. Over five online sessions\, we’ll introduce the structure\, familiarise you with threading\, lifting\, and the rules of overshot — and then show you how to bend them. Add more than one colour? Use textured or bobbly yarn? Create your own structure? Absolutely yes\, yes and yes! \nThis course is ideal for newer weavers\, working from the beginning of the structure on four shafts. But if you have more experience and want a fresh challenge\, we welcome you too. You’ll leave with confidence in reading and adapting overshot drafts\, plus a toolkit of ideas for exploring colour\, texture\, and design in your own weaving. \nDuring the sessions\, we will explore: \n\nThe basic principles of overshot weaving\nHow to read and understand overshot drafts\nHow threading blocks relate to treadling sequences\nExperimenting with colour\, texture and pattern emphasis\nAdapting drafts and designing your own overshot patterns\nWays of pushing the structure further into other weave effects\n\nBetween sessions\, you’ll be encouraged to weave samples exploring the ideas discussed. We will also create a private online group where participants can share progress\, questions and inspiration throughout the course.\nEach session will be recorded if you cannot attend live. \nEquipment\nTo join the study group\, you will need: \n\nA 4-shaft loom or larger – 4 shafts are more than enough to explore overshot and have a lot of fun\, but we’ll also cater for anyone with 8 shafts or more who wants to experiment further and push the structure in new directions.\nA selection of yarns to experiment with colour and texture\nSquared paper\, coloured pencils and an eraser for drafting (or drafting software if you already have it\, it is NOT a requirement)\n\nWe hope you can join us.\nThis course can be paid for in two instalments: £85 now and the remaining £55 by 30th September.

SUMMARY:The Loom Shed Summer Weave Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four days of just focussing on you and your weaving. Whatever your experience or if you have none at all\, please join us in our loom-filled workshop for tuition\, chats about colour and good company. \nThis year our theme is colour\, so we’ll look at the colour wheel\, tone and proportion of one colour to another and how we can best use colour in our weaving. There will be a pause in the weaving everyday to contemplate a new aspect of colour and how we use it in our weaving. Take this opportunity to try something new. \nIf you’ve never tried weaving before\, we will take you through the step-by-step process of setting up a loom before guiding your through several different weave structures. Learn how to read them\, but importantly to weave them well. Explore the colour interactions between warp and weft. \nFor more experienced weaver\, why not use this time to try something new. Double weave\, Crackle or Summer and Winter are all good weave structures to explore colour or perhaps you have something else you’ve always wanted to try\, but never found the time or confidence? \nWe have sufficient equipment for you to borrow for the workshop\, but if you already have a loom\, please feel free to bring it with you. There will be plenty of tuition and support from Louise and Liz\, who will also ply you with tea\, coffee\, sweet treats and a nourishing lunch to keep mind\, body and spirit ticking over. \nWe’re looking forward to four days to focus on weaving\, we hope you can join us! \nLet us know if you’d like our list of accommodation. \nPayment by instalments is available.
