Modular (Domino) Knitting – An Introduction and Exploration with Alison Ellen

We are pleased Alison Ellen will join us again this Autumn, but this time online for a series of classes on Modular (Domino) knitting. We love Alison’s work and the creative way she uses stitches, so this is going to be fantastic!
This workshop will teach the basics of modular knitting: how to make squares that join as they knit, and then look at other tessellating shapes that can also be picked up from each other to make a seamless piece of knitting. This is a wonderful way to build knitting in blocks, moving away from the ‘normal’ straight-row knitting.
Usually, modular knitting is worked in garter stitch to make a flat fabric, but it’s equally good at making a 3D object, such as a bag, hat or cushion. There will be an introductory talk to show some possibilities, then demonstrations and worksheets with exercises to get started. We will look at effects such as using different stitches, which also shape the fabric, and different geometric shapes that can be knitted and joined in this way. It’s an amazing technique for playing with colour, as colours can be dropped in much more simply than in straight knitting: so there are endless possibilities.
After exploring some ideas, everyone can plan their own project, and will be expertly helped and guided by Alison in designing their own item to knit. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussions along the way.
This workshop is suitable for new knitters, as well as those with some experience. If you can knit, purl, cast on and decrease, you’ll be able to take part in this workshop, but all techniques will be demonstrated.
