“How  did I get into tablet weaving?

I joined a living history group in the early 2020’s, doing Iron Age through to Mediaeval period crafts. I had seen tablet woven samples and I thought it could be fun, so I found a book by Peter Collingwood and started weaving. Well, that was the theory. Could I cope with this? It was far too complicated at first, but as a spinner I was able to work out how tablet weaving was created. Since then I have expanded my knowledge and designed my own weaving. I now collect books on tablet weaving as a hobby.

The thing I love about textiles is once you have learnt the basic rules, then you can break them and see what really can be made. Sometimes it will work, but others not. Huge fun can be had by learning this way.

Ancient textiles give me the feeling of working with my ancestors, who were from Germany, Norway, the Faroes and Iceland which brings me back to the living history. It was meant to be.”
