Julie Hedges
I am an experienced weaver, braidmaker and teacher who worked in the Textiles Department at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham until 2000.
Since 1991, I have been researching the Indian technique of Ply-Split Braiding, used traditionally for animal harnesses and have been developing it to make wearable and sculptural pieces in a variety of yarns. The importance of yarn selection and use of colour in relation to structure is vital to my work.
I published ‘Ply-Split Braiding, an Introduction’ in 2006, ‘Ply-Split Braiding, Further Techniques’ in 2011and Ply-Splitting in 3 Dimensions in 2013, Ply-Split Braided Jewellery in 2016.
I teach workshops in Ply-Splitting & Decorative Twisted Cords, to groups throughout the UK and have taught at WSDG Summer Schools, most recently at Writtle in 2021 and Harper Adams 2023. I have also taught in India, USA, Italy, Japan, Denmark and Austria.
I have exhibited and sold my work in the UK, Europe & USA & I also work to commission.
I am a founder member of The Braid Society and have exhibited with them and taught at their international conferences.
