Enjoy a day immersing yourself in the craft of indigo. For this workshop we will be using fresh indigo leaves sourced from Devon and exploring the ways that colour can be obtained.
We are hoping for a good harvest this year to be able to explore three different ways of transferring colour from the leaves to yarn or fabric.
Our expert tutor, Jane Deane will guide us through the process of creating an indigo vat. This seems mystical and the colours on the top can be hypnotic, but it’s all down to the chemistry at work in the vat.
We will also be looking at more immediate ways to get the dye from the leaves, including a salt rub and katazome – a violent method using a hammer!
Jane will give you the tools to be able to follow your own investigation of the dye, ignite your own curiosity, both in the workshop and afterwards.
This will be a day to devote to the colour blue, although we can’t promise our delicious lunch will be blue themed
